Lee Cooper Llyod LC08229.390 – Men's Automatic Open Heart Watch, Blue Dial, All-Silver Steel, 66-Hour Power Reserve, 42 mm
The LC08229.240 made its case with warmth — the gold bezel, the two-tone bracelet, the light green dial that reads as natural and alive. The LC08229.390 makes a different case entirely. All-silver case. All-silver bracelet. Nothing added, nothing warm, no tonal variation to catch the eye and redirect it. The watch uses the absence of distraction as a design tool, directing everything toward the one element that justifies its existence as an automatic: the open heart aperture in the centre of a deep blue dial, through which the balance wheel of the movement is visible at all times.
Blue as Depth, Not Surface
There is a difference between a blue dial that sits on the surface of a watch and a blue dial that suggests depth beneath it. Light blues, turquoises, sky tones — these sit on the surface. The blue of the LC08229.390 belongs to the second category. It is the blue of deep water, of the sky at altitude, of the instrument dials that navigators and pilots chose precisely because this blue creates the impression that the display exists within a dimensional space rather than on a flat plane.
Against this depth, the open heart aperture works differently than it does on the green dial version. On green, the balance wheel emerges from a bright, naturalistic background — you see it in natural light, surrounded by colour. On blue, the balance wheel is visible as if through a porthole in something that has substance — the opening looks down into the movement rather than across its surface. It is a more concentrated, more directed view of the mechanism, and the blue amplifies it.
The Open Heart in Context
The open heart complication cuts a window in the dial at the precise location of the balance wheel — the oscillating regulator that controls the release of energy from the mainspring through the gear train to the hands. On the blue dial, this window is framed by a colour that makes the balance wheel's metallic surfaces read with maximum contrast. The mechanism's motion — the back-and-forth oscillation that occurs dozens of times per minute, that will continue for 66 hours on a full wind without any external input — is the only moving element in the watch's visual field, and the blue background ensures it receives all the attention.
Sixty-six hours of power reserve means the movement visible through that aperture keeps running from Friday evening to Monday morning without being worn. It is the practical specification that sets the Llyod range apart from standard entry-level automatics, and it is as relevant on the blue version as on the green: the mechanism does not change colour with the dial.
All Silver — Confidence Without Addition
The 42 mm all-silver case and bracelet — tapering from 26 mm at the lugs to 20 mm at the clasp — represent the LC08229.390's most deliberate design choice. Two-tone is an easy way to add visual interest to a watch. A gold bezel is a quick way to warm a cool palette. The all-silver version refuses both shortcuts and achieves its character entirely through the relationship between the silver exterior and the blue dial. This requires more confidence in the dial and mechanism to carry the watch visually — and the blue open heart delivers it.
All-silver against blue is also a combination without a fixed address in trend. It was correct twenty years ago, it is correct now, and nothing that happens to watch fashion over the next decade is likely to make it incorrect. The LC08229.390 does not need to be current because it is not making a statement about the current moment.
5 ATM, 159 Euros — The Honest Numbers
Five ATM of water resistance covers rain, hand-washing and casual swimming — the realistic daily exposure of a watch worn by an active man who is not specifically avoiding water. The mineral crystal will accumulate minor surface marks over extended daily wear; at 159 euros, this is the correct material choice, and it does not affect the mechanical performance or the visibility of the balance wheel through the open heart aperture. The LC08229.390 is an automatic watch with a genuine open heart complication, 66 hours of power reserve and a blue dial, at a price that does not require rationalisation.
