Spinnaker Fleuss SP-5180-01 Solar Wave – Drew Brophy Surfer's Journey Automatic Watch, 500 Pieces, Multicolour Dial, Orange Rubber Strap
Most watch collaborations begin with a brand and end with a character on a dial. The Spinnaker Fleuss Automatic SP-5180-01 Solar Wave begins differently: with a canvas, a brush, and an artist standing in his Southern California studio putting down the blues and oranges of a coastline he has surfed for decades. Drew Brophy's painting Surfer's Journey existed as a large-format original work before it became a watch dial. The collaboration with Spinnaker was not the starting point of the artwork — it was the destination, after the painting was complete.
That sequence matters. The dial of the Solar Wave is not an illustration created to specification. It is a reproduction of an original painting, miniaturised and rendered in the detail that the watchmaker's craft allows. 500 numbered pieces. Miyota 8215 automatic movement. Orange rubber strap. 150-metre water resistance. A watch that contains a painting, and a painting that belongs on a watch.
Drew Brophy – Southern California's Surf Art Legend
Drew Brophy has spent his career at the intersection of surfing and fine art. His work — characterised by vivid tropical colour, organic wave forms, and a graphic energy that reads immediately as surf culture — has appeared on surfboards, murals, clothing and limited-edition art objects. He is not a designer who surfs occasionally; he is a surfer who paints constantly, drawing from the same water he enters every morning when the conditions are right.
This distinction is what makes the Spinnaker collaboration coherent rather than convenient. Drew Brophy's Surfer's Journey was not created to be a watch dial. It was created because Brophy believes — as he has said repeatedly — that "catching a wave means riding the heartbeat of the planet." The painting came from that belief. The watch comes from the painting. The sequence has integrity from start to finish.
Surfer's Journey – From Canvas to Dial
The process of translating a large-format painting to a 43 mm watch dial is not straightforward. The original work carries spatial and tonal qualities that depend on scale: the way colour transitions read across a large surface, the way the eye moves through a composition when it has room to do so, the way individual marks accumulate into an overall impression. All of this must be re-engineered for the constraints of a dial — the space reduced by a factor of several hundred, the colours recalibrated for reproduction on a surface that will be read in varying light conditions, the composition adjusted so that hands and indices coexist with the artwork without compromising either.
The result on the Solar Wave is a multicolour dial that holds the character of the original painting while functioning as a legible timepiece. The blues of the ocean and the sky, the oranges of the Southern California light at its most intense — both present, balanced, and rendered with the craft that the Fleuss platform makes possible.
Blue and Orange – The Two Sacred Hours
In surf culture, time is organised around two windows that experienced surfers protect with the same discipline that their counterparts in other fields protect their most productive hours. Dawn patrol — the early morning session, before the wind arrives, when the ocean is glassy and the world is quiet — and the sunset session, when the swell has had all day to build and the light turns the water the specific gold-and-orange that makes every photograph taken at that moment look like the last photograph ever taken.
Blue is the colour of dawn on the water. Orange is the colour of sunset over it. Drew Brophy built Surfer's Journey around these two hours, and the Solar Wave's palette — the blue and orange bezel, the multicolour dial, the orange rubber strap — carries that structure across the entire watch. You read the time through the painting, on the wrist, at both ends of the day that the painting is about.
Fleuss Platform, 43 mm – The Right Case for the Right Painting
The Fleuss Automatic is Spinnaker's established automatic diver platform — a case architecture developed for serious water use and refined over multiple collection releases. On the Solar Wave, the 43 mm 316L stainless steel case at 12.8 mm thick and 51 mm lug-to-lug provides the dial surface that Surfer's Journey needs to be rendered with its full complexity. A smaller case would compress the painting's colour transitions beyond the point at which they retain their character — at 43 mm, the artwork breathes.
The blue and orange bicolour bezel frames the dial in the same chromatic register as the painting itself, creating continuity between the artwork and the case that makes the watch read as a unified design object rather than a painting dropped into a generic sports watch. The screw-down crown seals the case for 150-metre / 15 ATM water resistance — a specification that places the Solar Wave firmly in serious diver territory despite the art-forward design brief.
Miyota 8215 – Self-Winding Through Every Session
The Miyota 8215 automatic calibre — 21 jewels, 21 600 vibrations per hour, 42-hour power reserve, bidirectional rotor, date display — is the engine under the Solar Wave's painted hood. It winds itself through wrist motion, runs accurately through daily wear, and requires no management from its owner between service intervals. For a surfer wearing this watch through morning sessions, beach time, paddling, and evening sun, the automatic winding system means the watch is always ready without any deliberate action. The movement's date complication is integrated into the dial's artistic layout through careful positioning — functional without interrupting the composition.
Applied Indices with Swiss Super-LumiNova – Readable Before Dawn
Dawn patrol starts in the dark. The applied indices with Swiss Super-LumiNova treatment on the Solar Wave ensure the time is readable in the pre-dawn darkness of a beach car park, before the morning light arrives and the ocean reveals itself. The lume charges through ambient light exposure and releases stored energy in low light — the same principle at work whether the wearer is reading the time before sunrise or navigating a night-time environment where the multicolour dial's colours are no longer the primary aid to legibility.
Orange Rubber Strap – The Painting Continues
The 22 mm orange rubber strap is the most committed design decision in the Solar Wave's construction. Rubber is the correct material for surf use: it does not absorb water, does not degrade in salt, dries immediately after immersion, flexes in cold water without stiffening, and sits comfortably against wet skin over extended periods. These properties are independent of colour. But orange — the orange of Drew Brophy's Southern California sunset, the orange of the painting's warm palette, the orange that the bezel begins and the strap continues — transforms the strap from a practical component into a design statement.
The Solar Wave on an orange strap is a watch that makes a specific claim about where it belongs and what it celebrates. It is not a claim that requires explanation.
500 Pieces – Art in a Limited Run
The SP-5180-01 Solar Wave is limited to 500 individually numbered pieces. In the context of a watch whose dial reproduces an original painting by a recognised artist, this production limit is not merely a commercial decision — it is a curatorial one. Drew Brophy's original Surfer's Journey exists in one form. Its watchmaking translation exists in 500 forms. The owners of those 500 watches hold objects that exist at the intersection of horology and fine art, produced in a quantity small enough to be meaningful and large enough to reach the collectors who will genuinely wear them.
Why the SP-5180-01 Solar Wave Belongs in Your Collection
The only watch dial in this catalogue from an original painting
The Solar Wave is the only reference in the entire Spinnaker catalogue — and among very few watches at this price point in the broader market — whose dial reproduces an original painting created by a living artist on a physical canvas before its watchmaking adaptation. That process gives the dial an authenticity and a history that no commissioned illustration can replicate.
Dawn to dusk — a complete day on the ocean in one watch
The blue and orange palette of Surfer's Journey represents the two hours that define a surfer's relationship with the ocean. The Solar Wave wears that relationship on the wrist, from the dawn patrol through the sunset session, across every tide in between. It is the most emotionally coherent watch in the Spinnaker limited edition catalogue.
500 numbered pieces, Miyota 8215, 15 ATM — quality equal to the concept
The Solar Wave is not content to be visually ambitious without backing it technically. The Miyota 8215 movement, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and 150-metre water resistance make it as functional as it is beautiful. The 500 numbered pieces and two-year international warranty complete a proposition that addresses the surf art collector and the serious watch enthusiast with equal credibility.
